It was announced in 2003 that the very popular Naruto anime series would be making the large transition from TV set to full theatrical release in a movie to be released August 21st, 2004. After much anticipation the movie opened up to sold out crowds, quickly climbing to the top of the Japanese box office. With an estimated 13,000,000 people seeing the movie in theaters, it would soon be announced that a second Naruto movie would be released the following Summer on August 6th, 2005. The success continued and on its premiere day, it was shown that Naruto the Movie 3, the very last movie from part 1 of the Naruto anime series that will be made, would be released in theaters the next Summer on August 5th, 2006. It can now safely be assumed that a Naruto movie will be released in Summer of 2007 featuring the updated characters from part 2 of the Naruto series.

The first ever theatrical release of a Naruto anime title was released on August 21, 2004 to large crowds throughout Japan, it was indeed an instant hit that stayed atop the Japanese box office charts for a good run. Due to it's unexpected popularity a sequel to the movie was made for a theatric release in 2005, and has now spawned an entire series of Naruto movies with the third movie being released on August 5th, 2006. Naruto the Movie 1 was released on DVD in Japan on April 28th, 2005 and in Taiwan on May 27th, 2005 (under an alternative name "Naruto–Princess Snow Ninja rule").
As a bonus the DVD featured a short special (Konoha Undokai, "The Leaf's Athletic Meet"). The ten minute opening revolves around Naruto's inability to use the washroom while participating in the tournament. One thing that makes the short interesting is that nearly every character who had ever appeared in the Naruto series up until that point (living, and even dead) makes an appearance.

The Naruto anime series first hit the silver screen in Japan on August 21st 2004 in the very first theatrical release of a Naruto title. Being an instant smash hit, estimated to be seen by over 13,000,000 people across Japan, it would soon be announced that a second Naruto movie was in the works due to the unexpected popularity of the first, and thus, we have this movie which was released in theaters across Japan on August 6th, 2005.
This time it isn't just Naruto, but Konoha villages Nara Shikamaru and Haruno Sakura, and from the (wind country) Sand villages Gaara, and Kankurou are making their appearance. The third Naruto movie to be released in theaters was announced on August 6th, 2005 at the premiere of the second Naruto movie. This third movie, Naruto the Movie 3, opens on August 5th, 2006 in theaters across Japan and will feature many of the most popular characters from the series, with some new summer clothing. If this movie were to take place during the anime series timeline (which differs greatly from the manga series timeline) it would have taken place between part 1 and 2 of the series, after the Sasuke Retrieval Arc and sometime before the end of part 1 of the series.

It has been announced that this will be the very last Naruto movie in part 1 of the anime. As a promotional item, the first 100,000 Naruto fans to watch the movie at select theaters through-out the country will receive a high quality Naruto yo-yo (dubbed a Datteba yo-yo), with a picture of Naruto that when spun, special LED lights inside will light up, making it appear as a rasengan with colors that change while spinning.

Plot Summary: Naruto Shippuuden is the continuation of the original animated TV series Naruto.The story revolves around an older and slightly more matured Uzumaki Naruto and his quest to save his friend Uchiha Sasuke from the grips of the snake-like Shinobi, Orochimaru. After 2 and a half years Naruto finally returns to his village of Konoha, and sets about putting his ambitions to work, though it will not be easy, as He has amassed a few (more dangerous) enemies, in the likes of the shinobi organization; Akatsuki.

Episode 1 - "Homecoming"
Naruto Uzumaki returns to his village of Konoha after a two-and-a-half-year training journey with Jiraiya. He is reintroduced to his peers, who have advanced at least to Chunin rank, unlike Naruto who is still a Genin. Elsewhere, two members of the organization Akatsuki head towards the village of Sunagakure to capture Gaara, who has since become the Kazekage, the village leader.

Episode 2 - "Akatsuki makes its move"
Jiraiya tells Kakashi Hatake that Akatsuki's plan to collect the tailed beasts is underway. Because of the Demon Fox inside him, Naruto is in danger any time he leaves the village, so Jiraiya relinquishes Naruto's training to Kakashi, who can ensure his safety. Kakashi offers to give Naruto and Sakura a test to see how far they have improved. Meanwhile, the Akatsuki members Deidara and Sasori arrive at the entrance of the Sunagakure. They discover that Yura, their sleeper agent, has already cleared the guards.

Episode 3 - "The results of training"
Kakashi challenges Naruto and Sakura with the bell test, in which they must forcefully take from Kakashi two jingle bells using whatever means necessary. Sakura and Naruto both demonstrate their newly acquired skills. At Sunagakure, Deidara reveals his ability to manipulate exploding clay. He takes to the skies aboard a giant clay bird and begins his aerial assault by lobbing exploding clay spiders onto the guards, instantly killing them. As soon as he makes it to the Kazekage building, however, he finds Gaara there waiting for him.

Episode 4 - "Jinchūriki of the Sand"
Naruto and Sakura both realize that even though they have vastly improved, they are still no match for Kakashi's superior techniques, and decide to resort to more unconventional means. They win the challenge by threatening to spoil the ending of Kakashi's new graphic novel, forcing him to cover his ears and shut his eyes. Meanwhile, Deidara and Gaara begin their battle. Deidara finds a formidable challenge in Gaara's abilities to control and manipulate sand.

Episode 5 - "As the Kazekage...!"
Deidara sees that subduing the Kazekage is not as easy as he thought. He hurls exploding clay at Gaara to no effect, as Gaara can quickly summon a shield of sand around him with relative ease. Gaara then commands his sand to attack Deidara who has no choice but to try to evade. Gaara's sand eventually catches up with Deidara and crushes his arm.

Episode 6 - "Quota Cleared"
Deidara is determined to capture the Kazekage. Unfazed by the loss of his arm, he unleashes a massive clay bomb onto the village. Gaara is able to deflect the bomb by using his sand to create an enormous shield over the village. However, this leaves him open to a sudden attack, and he inadvertently uses sand that had been seeded with Deidara's clay to defend himself. Deidara then detonates the clay-infested sand, which knocks Gaara unconscious. Deidara captures him and flies away.

Episode 7 - "Dash, Kankuro"
As Deidara carries an unconscious Gaara out of the village, Gaara's older brother Kankuro chases after them. At the village entrance he discovers that all the guards there have already been killed. Upon catching Deidara and Sasori, Kankuro initiates his Puppet Technique by summoning his puppets Karasu, Kuroari, and Sanshouo. Sasori sees this as an opportunity to demonstrate his skills, and he allows Deidara to go ahead so that he can battle Kankuro alone.

Episode 8 - "Team Kakashi deployed"
Kankuro's attacks are all nullified by Sasori's scorpion-like tail. He eventually pierces Kankuro with his tail, inflicting him with a slow poison. Kankuro is puzzled at how easily Sasori counters his fighting style. Sasori reveals that he himself used to be from Sunagakure and that Kankuro's puppets are his own creations. In response to the Akatsuki assault, Sunagakure sends a distress call to Konoha.

Episode 9 - "The Jinchūriki's tears"
Kankuro is brought back to the village but he is feeling the effects of Sasori's deadly poison. The village's medics are helpless arriving at a cure. Baki decides to seek help from the village's elders, Chiyo and Ebizo. Meanwhile, Konoha receives the emergency message from Sunagakure. Tsunade chooses to send Kakashi, Naruto and Sakura to respond to the Sand's need. Along the way, Sakura learns for the first time that Naruto's body contains the demon fox.

Episode 10 - "Sealing Jutsu: Illusionary Dragon Nine Seal"
Deidara and Sasori arrive at the secret Akatsuki hideout. The Akatsuki leader gathers his followers and they begin the ritual to extract the One-Tailed Shukaku from Gaara. At Sunagakure, Kankuro's condition is worsening and Chiyo claims that even her expertise is not enough to counter Sasori's poison. At Konoha, Tsunade foresees the difficulty of Team Kakashi's mission and orders Team Guy to back them up.

Episode 11 - "The medical ninja's pupil"
After traveling for three days, Team Kakashi arrives just in time to save Kankuro. Using the skills she acquired from her apprenticeship under Tsunade, Sakura is able to extract the poison and create an antidote. Kankuro regains consciousness and gives Kakashi a piece of cloth from Sasori's outfit, allowing Kakashi's ninja dogs to track the Akatsuki member. Code:

Episode 12 - "The retired old lady's determination"
Team Kakashi heads out to Akatsuki's hideout along with Chiyo. On the way, Chiyo tells them about the Tailed Beasts. Meanwhile Pakkun heads out to Team Guy and informs them that they are quite close to the Akatuski hideout. The Akatuski send out Kisame and Itachi to stop Team Guy and Team Kakashi respectively.

Episode 13 - "A destined meeting"
The battle between Team Guy and Kisame begins while Kakashi explains the danger of Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan to the rest of his team and reveals what he's discovered to be its weakness. Guy's team is quickly subdued leaving Guy to fight Kisame alone. Kakashi leads the attack against Itachi with Naruto following close behind, but Naruto is stopped when his allies vanish leaving him alone to face three Itachis.

Episode 14 - "Naruto's growth"
The battle between Guy and Kisame gets into full swing. Guy bring outs his nunchaku to compensate for Kisame's sword, but takes a beating from Kisame's water attacks. Guy has to resort to his ultimate 6 Celestial Gates attack to even the score . Guy and Kisame jump to the skys and ready themselves and Neji takes this chance to break free of Kisame's water prison. Meanwhile, Naruto realizes he is caught in an illusion and recalls his training with Jiraiya to dispell Itachi's illusion. When Naruto starts to apply his knowledge, Itachi remarks on Naruto's improvement.

Episode 15 - "Hidden sphere - It is named...!"
The two battles continue from previous episode. Naruto was released from Itachi’s Genjutsu by Chiyo and Sakura after his failed attempt. Guy opens the sixth gate and defeats Kisame using Morning Peacock. Distracted and immobilized by Kakashi’s shadow clone, Itachi took a direct hit from Naruto’s Great Ball Rasengan. The Konoha shinobi then find out, to their surprise, that they have not defeated Itachi or Kisame, but Yuura and an unknown person in Akatsuki’s cloaks.

Episode 16 - "The Jinchūriki's secret"
Kakashi's and Guy's teams both figure out that their battles with the doppelganers were set-ups to delay them from coming to Gaara's rescue. Granny Chiyo reveals that in attempts to control a Bijuu's power they were binded into human hosts called "Jinchuriki", and that the human host dies when the bijuu is extracted--increasing the urgency of saving Gaara. Kankuro is awake and joins a meeting of the Sand council where we also learn some more history of the Sand. Both teams stop to rest since their battles have taken their tolls and in prepation for the battles to come. Akatsuki sends Zetsu is sent to dispose of the doppelganers bodies and episode ends.

Episode 17 - "Gaara dies!"
Team Guy and Team Kakashi both finish their breaks and go on towards the Akatsuki lair. Naruto shows intense passion and is in a hurry to reach Gaara. Chiyo notices this and Kakashi explains to her that Naruto is also a Jinchuriki and knows the pain Gaara has lived through. Chiyo explains that she was the ninja who sealed Shukaku in Gaara, in order to protect the Sand Village. Meanwhile, Akatsuki has finished extracting Shukaku from Gaara. Team Guy and Team Kakashi finally meet in front of the sealed entrance to the Akatsuki lair.

Team Guy and Team Kakashi find out there is a barrier protecting the Akatsuki hideout, being generated by 5 forbidden tags in the area. Episode 20 - "Hiruko vs. two kunoichi"
Chiyo explains to Sakura that Sasori used to be one of the best puppeteers in Sunagakure, until he began experimenting with real people. Sakura learns that Sasori's true body is hiding within his favorite puppet, Hiruko, getting rid of the puppeteer's weakness altogether. The only way to defeat Sasori is to destroy his puppet. Using teamwork, Chiyo and Sakura are able to dodge Sasori's attacks and demolish the puppet, from which Sasori himself emerges. Just outside, Deidara begins telling Naruto and Kakashi how much stronger Sasori is compared to himself.

Episode 21 - "Sasori's real face"
With his puppet destroyed, Sasori reveals himself to Chiyo and Sakura, looking no older than when he left his village twenty years ago. As a further bit of nostalgia, he produces a summoning scroll and calls forth the Third Kazekage, whom Sasori has made into a puppet. Using its weapons, which are even more dangerous than Hiruko's, Sasori is able to catch Sakura in a poison gas cloud. Meanwhile, Kankuro, Temari's team, and Ebizo make their way to the Akatsuki hideout.

Episode 22-23 - "Chiyo's inner hand" - "Father and Mother"
"Chiyo's secret skills"
Sakura manages to escape the poison gas cloud by using an explosive scroll on herself. Chiyo calls forth the "Mother" and "Father" puppets that Sasori created to fight him and the Third. They manage to hold down the Third for awhile until Sasori releases the Third's secret technique: Iron Sand. Meanwhile, Team Guy are having trouble fighting the clones and showing exhaustion from the battle. Naruto and Kakashi manage to avoid Deidara's clay bombs and keep up with him.

"Father and Mother"
The Iron Sand stops both puppets from moving. Chiyo's right arm (which she had turned into a puppet) gets clogged and broken as well. Chiyo thinks back to the past and remembers how Sasori created and controled his first puppets, Father and Mother. Sakura urges Chiyo to use her again as her puppet. With Chiyo's help, Sakura avoids the columns formed by the Iron Sand to attack her.

Episode 24 - "The Third Kazekage"
Sakura and Chiyo continue their battle with Sasori, while Naruto and Kakashi follow Deidara, and Team Guy fights their clones. Sakura remembers her training with Tsunade when she was taught to observe the enemies' weakness and dodge their attacks. Sasori attacks with an Iron Sand pyramid and prism, but Sakura is able to fend them off, causing a cave in. Sasori then uses an new technique to attack with randomly-growing iron spikes, landing a hit imbued with a poison that quickly paralyzes its victims. With a final attack of the Third Kazekage's puppet, Sasori attempts to kill the seemingly helpless Sakura, only to discover at the last second that it was a ruse. Somehow immune to the effects of the poison, Sakura destroys his puppet with a single punch at the last second.

Episode 25 - "Three minutes of life and death"
Sakura reveals that she took an antidote against Sasori's poison which will make her immune to it for three minutes, forcing herself and Chiyo to end the battle quickly. Meanwhile, Naruto and Kakashi continue their pursuit of Deidera. Deidera attempts to split up Naruto and Kakashi by creating a swarm of explosive jumping spiders out of his clay and has them pursue Kakashi. Kakashi makes a shadow clone as a decoy and the spiders, mistaking the shadow clone for the real Kakashi, detonate harmlessly. Kakashi then catches back up with Naruto and reveals a plan. Sakura and Chiyo ready themselves for the battle with Sasori, who reveals that he made himself into a human puppet.

Episode 26 - "10 Puppets vs 100 Puppets"
Sasori is barraging Chiyo and Sakura with fire and water, forcing them to hide behind rocks. He then attempts to kill Chiyo with his blades, but Sakura pulls him in and punches him, shattering his body. Instead of dying however, Sasori's broken pieces come together and reform. To deal with him, Chiyo summons the Ten Puppets of Chikamatsu. In reponse, Sasori takes out his final one hundred human puppets. Sakura and Chiyo hold their own against Sasori's puppets, destroying many in the process. Chiyo then gives Sakura a chakra-sealing orb, which she throws at Sasori. The orb then transforms into a giant maw that pins Sasori into the rock wall, preventing him from using chakra. Just when they thought the battle was over, Sakura sees Sasori rise behind Chiyo, preparing to land a sneak attack and stab her with a sword. At the last second, Sakura acts as a human shield and gets stabbed with a poisoned katana through her abdomen.

Episode 27 - "The impossible dream"
Chiyo injects an antidote into Sakura and manages to stab Sasori in his only living part, his heart, using the Father and Mother puppets. With Sasori immobilized, Chiyo revives the near-dead Sakura using her Resurrection Technique. As he dies, Sasori rewards Sakura for defeating him, telling her where he planned to meet with one of his spies who had been working undercover as one of Orochimaru's subordinates. Meanwhile as Kakashi and Naruto are pursuing Deidara, Kakashi reveals his plan to activate his version of Mangekyo Sharingan.

Naruto is assigned to watch Akamaru, Kiba Inuzuka's nin-dog, who has recently been acting strangely after being infected by a poison during a mission. This is confirmed when Akamaru begins to violently attack Konoha's inhabitants, and the ANBU take him into custody, being prepared to kill him if they are unable to cure him. However, this is too much for Kiba, and he rescues Akamaru, attempting to cure him on his own. Naruto pursues Kiba, who refuses to believe that Naruto is attempting to help him. Finally, Hana Inuzuka, Kiba's sister, arrives, and with Naruto, attempts to restrain a now giant-sized Akamaru to use an anti-toxin to remove the poison. Kiba succeeds in doing so, although he is nearly killed in the process. It is later revealed that Akamaru tried his hardest to miss Kiba's vital points, something that Kiba thanks Akamaru for.

The Legendary Onbaa arc
Episode 185 "Hidden Leaf's Legend, Onbaa Really Did Exist!!"
A legendary creature, the Onbaa, is the central focus of this episode, attaching to Naruto's back and causing havoc wherever Naruto goes. Despite Naruto's efforts, it remains firmly attached to Naruto's back. Tsunade mentions that Jiraiya once sought the Onbaa, although Tsunade paid him no heed at the time, believing him to be a fool. The Onbaa continues to increase in size, eventually becoming larger than Naruto himself. However, during a mission, it aids Naruto, causing Naruto to reconsider their relationship, but the Onbaa's mother appears, driving Naruto off and claiming her offspring. The child manages to calm the mother, and the two leave. As Naruto returns to the village, most of the inhabitants have Onbaa on their backs, something Naruto takes in with great gusto but does little to remedy.

Episode 198 "ANBU gives up, Naruto's memory"
The ANBU agents use reverse hypnosis on Naruto, but realize that he remembers nothing of importance. Some of the group researches Gennou, but finds little except for him being a mediocre carpenter who did little out of the ordinary. However, it is revealed that his letter of introduction was forged, and investigation of the scene of his suicide bombing and the corpse in the hospital suggests that Gennou staged his death.

Episode 200 "Working hard on active duty, The strongest helper"
The group sets out to disarm the traps without Gennou finding out. The research then concludes that Gennou set the traps 30 years ago, as part of a mission for the Hidden Dragonfly Village, which was destroyed by another village shortly after he completed his mission, resulting in his son's death. Naruto comes to terms with the fact that the old man he befriended attempted to destroy the village, and finds a lead that Gennou is in the mountains behind the village.

Episode 201 "Multiple traps, Countdown to destruction"
Naruto pursues Gennou to the mountains at the back of town, and hears that he plans to detonate explosive tags there, burying Konoha in a massive rockslide. Before he can do so, Naruto's friends arrive, Hinata having informed them where he was going. They combine their efforts to prevent him from detonating tags, and manage to save the village. Gennou dies after saying that he wanted his son to enjoy another scavenger hunt, and the group realizes that while he had initially intended to destroy Konoha, because Naruto reminded him of his grandson, he made his traps into a scavenger hunt.

Naruto and the members of Team 8 head into Yakumo's house to find her with Kurenai, threatening to erase her former sensei from existence. Yakumo ultimately overcomes the Idou and realizes that Kurenai cared about her. Kurenai then returns to an overjoyed Team 8.

Naruto and Kiba are ordered to escort a man named Shinemon who is transporting a rare and valuable artifact. Shinemon makes the mission almost insufferable with his pompous, overbearing attitude and his willingness to put the two in danger just to protect his own interests. Bandits steal the artifact, and when Naruto saves Shinemon after he puts his life at risk to try to save the Kacho Fugetsu, he teaches him that possessions are more valuable than people. It is also revealed that the Kacho Fugetsu is not truly worth very much.

Episode 157 "Run!!! Curry of life"
Naruto Uzumaki, Rock Lee, Neji Hyuga, and Tenten continue their fight against Raiga Kurosuki, with Raiga utilizing a local thunderstorm to provide him with a practically infinite source of lightning to use. Raiga manages to knock all four out with his electricity, and when Ranmaru arrives, he begins to leave with Ranmaru, although Ranmaru, his viewpoint of the world changed by the Konoha ninja, attempts to lead Raiga off a cliff. However, a drunken Lee attacks Raiga, who angrily dispatches him. Ranmaru attempts to get Raiga to stop the battle, but Raiga attacks him. Naruto returns, though and defeats Raiga by sending off a ledge, from which Raiga commits suicide by using lightning to incinerate his body. The team then returns to Konoha.

Survival Plan arc

Each of Konoha's Genin have been assigned to lead a squad of three academy students in a survival exercise. Naruto Uzumaki is teamed up with Konohamaru, Moegi, and Udon. The three find out that Naruto's leadership, navigation, and foraging skills leave much to be desired and they end up lost in the mountains during a thunderstorm. They learn to pool their strengths to survive the mountains and survive long enough for help to arrive.

The bounty hunter is wounded in the battle, and Naruto's group takes him to safety, but discovers that he, too, is a wanted criminal.

The bounty hunter reveals that he was framed for murdering a family and as the thief that he and Naruto's group is hunting is the culprit, he wants to capture him to clear his name. The four locate the thief in a ~Censored~ city, in the process of attempting to steal a valuable bell. After the bounty hunter captures the thief, he is captured himself, and his innocence is revealed. Despite this, Naruto's group fails the mission because they did not capture the thief.

Tsunade, Sakura, and Tenten string them along by giving them outrageous missions, preventing them from learning anything.

Upon arriving, they learn that the daimyo has died, and that his son, the successor, cares little about his duties due to the recent death of his sister. Later that evening, the Konoha ninja encounter Noroimusha and give chase. After cornering it, however, an examination by Neji's Byakugan makes the group realize that the armor the Noroimusha is wearing is empty.

Episode 163 "Machinator Kōmei's expectation"
The episode starts with the group talking at Mousou's house. After that they discuss that Kuumei, the village strategist and the son's potential rival for succession, may be behind the Norimusha. To approve this they try to visit the new fueduel lord Sagi at lake where he holds his lost memories of his sister Toki. The group protects the feudal lord from assassins, and pursues the Noroimusha to its meeting with Koumei, where after it is defeated, it is revealed that it and the previous Noroimusha were two different individuals.

Episode 164 "The late helper"
The episode starts with Mousou stating the mission is over. Naruto, however, is skeptical, and investigates where he and his companions fought the Noroimusha. He finds a secret passage to the feudal lord's mansion, but is caught. When Shima goes to warn Mousou about Naruto investigating. Mousou is seen directing a group of Watari ninja, and Shima is pinned down by shuriken. The Noroimusha arrives in Naruto's cell, and he is sentenced to death.

The episode starts with Neji, Tenten, and Kakashi staring at a grave. As they head back they throw off a pursuer with a replacement, but are being shadowed by another. Koumei is about to be forced to commit seppuku, but the Noroimusha saves him. Shortly afterwards, it is revealed that Naruto disguised himself as the Noroimusha. Kakashi fights Nagare, who uses moves copied from other ninja. Naruto, Neji and Tenten discover that the true identity of the Noroimusha is the feudal lord himself, who seeks to kill Mousou to avenge his father.

The episode begins with a flashback that reveals that Sagi, not Toki, died, and that Toki took on her brother's identity to avenge his death. Toki, in the guise of the Noroimusha. She attempts to attack Mousou, and Mousou's Watari ninjas and Naruto's group join the battle. While his companions, Naruto pursues Mousou and is caught in a genjutsu. Mosou reaveals to be Oki the migrating ninja. He seemingly kills Shima with Water Release: Water Dragon blast Technique and knocks Naruto underwater with Water Release: Great Explosion Technique. Naruto awakens when Sagi's ghost asks him to save Toki from her desire for revenge and defeat Mousou.

Naruto punches Oki, then tells Toki that he has seen Sagi. Naruto then fights against and defeats Oki. Shima turns out to have survived Oki's attack. Toki apologizes to her subjects for deceiving them, but asks them to allow her to remain ruler in order to restore the Bird Country. After the group leaves, Neji tells Naruto that the first Noroimusha they encountered was a real ghost, much to his horror.

This episode pays tribute to cooking-themed anime series such as Chūka Ichiban and Yakitate!! Japan. Naruto, Choji and Sakura volunteer to help Teuchi, whose daughter Ayame was kidnapped by a band of cooking ninja. To save her they must come up with the ultimate ramen recipe. Teuchi tries to teach them how to cook, and the three take advantage of their ninja techniques to make the perfect bowl of ramen.

Upon arriving, Anko recalls her time with Orochimaru in this area, and her cursed seal begins to resonate and cause her pain. At the docks, the group sees Yoroi Akado and Misumi Tsurugi accosting a young girl. Naruto chases them away, but does not recognize them. When the group sets off to one of the islands, Yoroi and Misumi attack, and Naruto nearly drowns until he is saved by the girl he saw earlier.

Episode 170 "Shock, The closed door"
Naruto awakens in the girl's hut, where she identifies herself as Isarabi. Upon thanking her, Naruto realizes that she is being ostracized by the local residents, and he angrily chases away the children that have arrived to torment her. Meanwhile, Orochimaru is meeting with Amachi, a scientist conducting experiments under his direction. Sasuke Uchiha is also present, and ends their conversation when it's directed towards him. The remaining members of Team Anko have arrived at the island, where they are briefed on the payment schedule that they have to defend, and they locate the Kaima in the meantime. However, Naruto arrives, and identifies the Kaima as Isaribi. The arrival of Yoroi enables Isaribi to escape, and the two swim away. Anko attempts to pursue but is paralyzed by pain from her cursed seal. Anko falls unconscious from the pain caused by the cursed seal.

Episode 171 "Infiltration, The set trap"
On the beach, Anko, still unconscious, is being tended by Ino. Meanwhile, Naruto explains his encounter with Isaribi earlier. The episode continues back into Anko's sudden rememborance of her memories. She sees Orochimaru approaching her, telling her that the Hokage knows about their expiriments. Shino, Naruto and Ino decided to continue their original mission: To protect the official payments and capture the Kaima(Isaribi). The group heads to Kikaijima, an island located in the Land of the Sea where supposedly the Kaima resides. Anko awakes and explains that the Kaima is a human who has undergone physical transmutations. While they are talking, Yoroi and Isaribi head underwater to Orochimaru's lair. Inside, Isaribi passes on the information relating to the official payments and asks when she will return to normal. Yoroi tells her that she is a prototype and when he is done collecting information from her, he would change her back. He also sends her to dispatch Naruto and the rest of the group who has just arrived on the shore. Shino, Naruto and Ino find themselves in an experimental laboratory with many creatrues contained in test pillars. Isaribi approaches from behind and pulls a trapdoor. They three disappear down and Anko appears behind Isaribi with a kunai at her throat. Isaribi gets away and leaves Anko locked in the room facing three large lion-like animal mutations. Anko makes quick work of the three, only leaving the curse mark to pain her. The three genin fall down to face a henchman working for them. Shino takes up the challenge while Naruto and Ino continue running to catch up with Anko. Anko, Naruto and Ino find themselves facing Amachi and Isaribi. Amachi and Isaribi run off just while another henchmen comes to face them. This time, Ino stays to fight while Naruto runs after Isaribi. Both opppnents for Ino and Shino disapear as the island begins to collapse. Isaribi, Amachi and Yoroi escape on a ship, leaving the whole for Team Anko to die in the collapsing building. Naruto frantically searches for an exit.

As Sasuke's remembrance of his childhood draws to a close, Sasuke returned home from the Academy one day to find all the members of the Uchiha clan murdered. Upon finding his parents' bodies, Sasuke discovered Itachi to be the one responsible for the massacre. Using his Mangekyo Sharingan, Itachi showed Sasuke their parents' deaths, causing Sasuke to run with fright. Itachi stopped him, telling him that he wasn't worth killing. As Itachi left, he informed Sasuke that if he wanted to take revenge for the clan, he would need to get stronger. To help Sasuke gain the strongest ability of the Uchiha, Itachi told Sasuke how to obtain his own Mangekyo Sharingan: to kill his closest friend. With that, Itachi left, leaving Sasuke to build a hate for his brother. Resolving to get stronger, Sasuke decided he would do whatever was necessary to kill Itachi. Returning to the present day, Sasuke and Naruto resume their battle.

Episode 132 "Close friend!"
Kakashi learns of Sasuke's defection and immediately goes after him. Meanwhile, believing Naruto to be his closest friend, Sasuke prepares to kill him, finding the loss of Naruto to be an acceptable price for the Mangekyo Sharingan. Naruto's Rasengan and Sasuke's Chidori clash multiple times, though neither is capable of overpowering the other. Activating his cursed seal in order to gain the upperhand, Sasuke uses his Chidori to pierce through Naruto, just missing his heart. While Sasuke thinks the battle to be won, the demon fox's chakra begins to envelop Naruto and the wound Sasuke inflicted starts to heal. Infused with the demon fox's strength and now willing to break Sasuke's body to bring him home, Naruto attacks.

Episode 133 "Howl of tears! You are my friend"
Naruto's newfound power overwhelms Sasuke, and his attempts at fighting Naruto off prove ineffective. It is not until his Sharingan fully develops that he is able to fend off Naruto and land a blow. Needing more strength to fight, Naruto calls upon even more of the demon fox's chakra. In doing so, the demon fox's chakra starts to surround Naruto, giving him the appearance of a one-tailed fox. This shroud also acts as a shield, and Sasuke's attacks are quickly dispersed before reaching Naruto. As the demon fox-form Naruto begins to attack, Sasuke is put on the defensive, forcing him to advance his cursed seal to its final level to compensate.

Episode 134 "The conclusion of the rain of tears"
With Naruto and Sasuke at their peaks of power, the two prepare their final attacks. Naruto creates a demon fox-fueled Rasengan, and Sasuke readies a cursed seal-powered Chidori. Their attacks ready, they fly at each other and their attacks clash, creating a dome of pure evil. Within the dome, the two deal final blows, with Sasuke punching Naruto and Naruto scratching Sasuke's headband. As the dome disperses, Sasuke stands over a defeated Naruto. Although he considers killing his friend, he realizes that that is what Itachi would want. Deciding to gain power his own way, Sasuke heads to Orochimaru.

Episode 135 "The broken promise"
The retrieval team is brought back to Konoha where, despite the severity of their injuries, all fully recover. When Naruto awakens, he apologizes to Sakura for not living up to his promise and bringing Sasuke back, though says he'll do it someday. Sakura replies that when that day comes, they'll do it together. Intending to act on that promise, Sakura asks to become Tsunade's apprentice, and Tsunade gladly accepts her. Jiraiya offers Naruto a similar privilege: leaving with him for three years to train. Naruto accepts, and Jiraiya tells him they'll leave whenever he's ready. Elsewhere, Sasuke arrives at Orochimaru's lair where he soon proves himself worthy of Orochimaru's guidance. As the three former members of Team 7 begin taking their own paths with the three Sannin to get stronger, the Akatsuki assembles, ready to start their mission three years from now.

Naruto arrives in the nick of time to save Sakura, but not before Kabuto tells her that Sasuke is dead. Naruto tells her not to believe him and a battle ensues. Shizune and her team encounter Mizuki, but all of them are defeated. When Ton-ton comes back to warn Tsunade, Naruto takes the innitiative to find Shizune with Ton-ton's help. Kakashi arrives and finds out the situation. Unfortunately, he has another mission. So, he summons Pakkun who will guide Iruka to Naruto. Iruka eventually catches up to Naruto and Pakkun sends Ton-ton back to the village. Pakkun leads them and they soon find Shizune. They chase after Mizuki, when they soon fall into a trap. Iruka reveals that Shizune is not Shizune, but actually Mizuki. Mizuki attacks Iruka while Naruto deals with Fujin and Raijin. But, Naruto's attacks don't even hurt them.

Episode 144 "The new three-man group Two people and a dog!"
Naruto is having trouble with the two brothers, and Iruka is having his share of difficulties with Mizuki. Iruka struggles to try and get the old Mizuki back, but Mizuki explains the only reason he was ever nice to Iruka was because he wanted to be the Hokage's favorite too. He wanted Iruka to be miserable, and not to have everyone else be so kind to him and not himself. Iruka and Mizuki then prepare to fight again. Mizuki is determined to make Naruto and Iruka suffer, and it appears like he has the upper edge with his improved strength and speed. Meanwhile, Ino, Choji, and Shikamaru are at their limits, and now Fujin and Raijin are free. That is until Tsunade shows up and defeats them both easily. Fujin and Raijin surrender and agree to return peacefully to the institution. Mizuki on the other hand has converted all of his speed to power and prepares to finish Naruto off. That is until Iruka thinks up a plan and traps Mizuki, giving Naruto the chance to Rasengan on him. As the transformed Gamabunta holds Shukaku in place, Naruto awakens Gaara. Tapping into the demon fox's power one last time, Naruto delivers a headbutt to Gaara and destroys Shukaku's form. Across Konoha, Konoha's ninja begin to overpower the invading forces. At the site of the Third's battle with Orochimaru, the Third realizes that he does not have enough strength left to fully seal Orochimaru's soul, and instead opts to seal his former pupils arms. He does so, robbing Orochimaru of his ability to use jutsu. Wishing his student a fond farewell, the Third dies reciting one last proverb. At this time Naruto and Gaara jump at each other, and Naruto succeeds in throwing the winning blow.

Realizing that Naruto's strength came from the desire to protect others, Gaara begins to reshape his view of the world as his siblings take him home, and apologizes to Temari and Kankuro. The four engage in battle, though Itachi and Kisame quickly gain the advantage. As Asuma and Kurenai are about to be killed, Kakashi comes to their rescue.

Itachi replies that they're after Naruto, which Kakashi elaborates as meaning they want the demon fox for their organization Akatsuki. Angered that Kakashi knows of their organization, Itachi instructs Kisame to kill Asuma and Kurenai, but to bring Kakashi with him. Before Kisame can do so, Might Guy arrives, forcing the two to flee.

Naruto soon discovers that popping the balloon is easier if he uses both of his hands, and progresses to the second step. The second step is fairly similar to the first, only this time Naruto must pop a rubber ball, something that will require much more power. After Naruto struggles with this step, Jiraiya helps him by drawing a leaf on his palm to give him a point to concentrate his efforts on. With some additional practice, Naruto is able to complete this stage as well. Elsewhere, Tsunade, an avid and extremely unlucky gambler, hits a winning streak, leading her to believe something bad is about to happen. As she tries to leave the city, she is met by Orochimaru and Kabuto.

Episode 89 "An Impossible Choice: The Pain Within Tsunade's Heart"
Naruto is tasked with combining the spinning and the power developed in the previous steps, something that Jiraiya cannot help him with. As he attempts to do both, Orochimaru asks Tsunade to heal his arms, the Third's sealing of them bringing him excruciating pain and making them unusable, leaving him unable to use techniques. Although she has no intentions of helping Orochimaru due to his killing the Third, Tsunade decides to consider the matter when he offers to revive her dead brother, Nawaki, and lover, Dan. Orochimaru gives her a week to think about it, and he leaves.

Episode 90 "Unforgivable! A Total Lack of Respect!"
While Tsunade has dinner that night, Jiraiya and Naruto arrive at the same bar. Suspicious of Jiraiya's reason for looking for her, Tsunade asks what he wants, to which he replies that Konoha wants her to be the new Hokage. She rejects the offer, saying anyone who would willingly take the title is a fool. Naruto, enraged that she would disrespect the title of Hokage and those who have held its position, challenges Tsunade to a battle. The two step outside, but Tsunade quickly proves to be far out of Naruto's league. Unwilling to give up, Naruto readies his imperfect Rasengan for an attack.

Episode 91 "Inheritance: The Necklace of Death"
Recognizing the danger the attack imposes, Tsunade forces it into the ground, where the minor damage it inflicts indicates that it is not yet complete. Despite this, Tsunade offers Naruto a proposition: if he can master the technique in one week, she'll give him her necklace, something worth an immense amount of money. If he can't, she gets all the money in his wallet. Naruto agrees to the bet, and leaves to start training.

Episode 92 "A Dubious Offer! Tsunade's Choice"
As the week goes by, Naruto continues his training, though he is unable to properly mix spinning and power and has varying results. Tsunade watches Naruto's progress from the background, noting how similar he is to both her dead brother and lover. Once a week goes by, Naruto appears to have been unsuccessful and lays unconscious with fatigue. Tsunade meets Jiraiya for drinks, where he tells her that he's aware Orochimaru has offered her something. After Jiraiya makes it clear that he will kill her if she helps Orochimaru, Tsunade drugs his drink, putting him to sleep. The next morning, Tsunade meets with Orochimaru as promised, and prepares to heal his arms. Before she can do so, she is stopped by Orochimaru's assistant: Kabuto Yakushi.

Episode 93 "Breakdown! The Deal Is Off!"
Having recognized that Tsunade's healing jutsu was filled with killing intent, Kabuto realized that she had no intention of helping Orochimaru. While Tsunade would have given anything to see her loved ones again, she couldn't bring herself to heal Orochimaru as he would only destroy Konoha, the village both her brother and lover died to protect. With Tsunade being the only person who can heal Orochimaru, they decide to take her by force, and Kabuto and Tsunade begin to fight. Although Tsunade has far more battle experience than Kabuto, he is able to hold his own against her, even managing to get in a few debilitating attacks. As Kabuto prepares to put Tsunade out of commission, Naruto, Jiraiya, and Tsunade's assistant, Shizune, arrive to help.

Episode 94 "Attack! Fury of the Rasengan!"
Uninterested in their assistance, Tsunade tries to resume her battle with Kabuto, though he slits his wrist, paralyzing her due to her fear of blood. As she is taken aside to recover, Jiraiya battles Orochimaru while Naruto and Shizune battle Kabuto. Due to the drug Tsunade gave him, Jiraiya is unable to properly control his chakra and his jutsu are underpowered. With Orochimaru unable to use his arms, however, his abilities are limited as well. Kabuto, on the other hand, is more than capable of dealing with Naruto and Shizune, and after making quick work of them returns his attention to Tsunade. Before he can harm her, Naruto appears and blocks his attack, determined to protect Tsunade. Using a shadow clone for assistance, Naruto grabs hold of Kabuto and delivers a perfect Rasengan to his stomach.

Episode 95 "The Fifth Hokage! A Life on the Line!"
Despite trying to heal himself after being hit with the attack, Kabuto's wounds are too extensive for him to deal with. When Naruto collapses due to the severity of Kabuto's last attack, Tsunade does what she can, determined to save him. Her efforts work, and he regains consciousness long enough to claim the necklace he has won. After he falls asleep, Tsunade puts the necklace around his neck, hoping that he will some day become Hokage. Orochimaru, recognizing Naruto as a potential future threat, tries to kill him. Tsunade, determined to make sure Naruto becomes Hokage, overcomes her fear of blood and uses herself as a human shield to block the attack. When asked why she would risk her life to save him, Tsunade replies that it is her duty as the Fifth Hokage, finally accepting the role she was offered. Intending to eliminate his former teammates, Orochimaru summons Manda while Tsunade and Jiraiya summon Katsuyu and Gamabunta respectively.

Episode 96 "Deadlock! Sannin Showdown!"
Katsuyu and Gamabunta double-team Manda, though the latter is able to hold his own. Using her inhuman strength, Tsunade is able to pin Manda down and delivers a finishing blow to Orochimaru. Deciding to use his last resort to regain the use of his arms, Orochimaru retreats with Kabuto, leaving Tsunade, Jiraiya, Shizune, and Naruto to their own devices. Once Naruto recovers and learns of Tsunade's acceptance of the Hokage title, he remarks that she is an undeserving of the job due to the fact that the Third was better in every possible way. The two step outside to have another fight, though this time Tsunade gives Naruto a kiss on the forehead instead of a blow to the face. After lunch, the group sets off for Konoha.

Episode 98 "Stop being a ninja! Tsunade's notice"
Upon arriving in Konoha, preparations are made to formally put Tsunade into office, though she is largely uninterested in formalities and leaves the task to her new assistants. She makes her rounds in the Konoha hospital, healing Kakashi and Sasuke of the damage done to their minds by Itachi's Tsukuyomi. When examining the wounds to Rock Lee's body, Tsunade discovers that the damage to his spine is too extensive, even for her, to heal with certainty. She advises Lee to give up on his dreams of being a ninja, citing that there is only a 50% chance that he will survive the operation.

Konohamaru, the Third Hokage's grandson, is unaccepting of Tsunade as his grandfather's successor and does what he can to prevent her inauguration. As Tsunade does research, hoping to increase the chances of Lee's surviving the operation, Naruto tries to convince Konohamaru that she will be a good Hokage. After Tsunade demonstrates her strength and healing abilities, Konohamaru decides Tsunade can be Hokage and that his grandfather won't fade into memory.

Guy and Lee discuss the operation, and Lee expresses his fears of dying as well as his fears of never being a ninja. The two reminisce about their time together, and Guy finally decides that if Lee dies during the operation, so will he, as he too can't live if Lee isn't a ninja. Guy's words inspire Lee, and he decides to take the operation. Tsunade, meanwhile, manages to increase the odds of Lee's survival to 58%, and is satisfied that Lee will most likely survive the operation. Tsunade is inaugurated as Hokage, and the role as the village's protector is passed on to her.

In this episode based on a special omake, Naruto convinces Sakura and Sasuke to help him see what Kakashi's face looks like under his mask. Each one of their plans, such as buying him ramen to force him to remove his mask while he eats, fails hilariously. At the same time, they inadvertently and unknowingly thwart attempts by three ninja to kill Kakashi. Kakashi finally agrees to take off his mask, revealing another mask beneath it.

Sakura gives them all medicane Tsunade had given her, and they seek shelter in a cave. Idate explains that he was once a Leaf ninja, but was tricked by Aoi into betraying the village.

Episode 107 "I want to fight you! Finally they clash, Sasuke vs Naruto"
Due to the injuries he received in the Land of Tea, Sasuke is stuck in the hospital recovering. Angry that Naruto has continued to get stronger while he is still not strong enough to defeat Itachi, he challenges Naruto to a fight when he and Sakura come to visit. Naruto accepts, and the two head to the roof. After exchanging attacks, Naruto creates a Rasengan and Sasuke prepares his Chidori. The two rush towards each other, with Sakura screaming for them to stop.

Episode 108 "Unseen crack"
As Naruto and Sasuke are about to clash, Kakashi appears and repels them both into differing water towers. Admiring the damage his attack has done to his water tower, Sasuke believes himself to be stronger than Naruto. On closer inspection, he finds Naruto's tower to be considerably worse off, and only comes to envy Naruto's strength more. Kakashi takes Sasuke aside and lectures him about not attacking friends. While Sasuke only half-listens to Kakashi's words, the arrival of Orochimaru's Sound Four erases Kakashi's message from his mind.

Episode 109 "The Sound's invitation"
Sasuke briefly does battle with the Sound Four members, though they quickly gain the upperhand. After they explain that they were once on Sasuke's level though got stronger once joining Orochimaru, they extend an invitation to Sasuke to accompany them to Orochimaru's lair. After doing so, they leave, allowing Sasuke to consider the matter. The appeal of gaining strength is too much to turn down, and Sasuke makes his way for Konoha's exit. On his way, he meets Sakura, who realizes that Sasuke is about to turn his back on the village. Although she does what she can to convince him to stay, Sasuke leaves, though not before thanking her and knocking her out. He joins the Sound Four members waiting for him, and the group leaves Konoha.

When Sakura awakens, she informs Tsunade of Sasuke's defection. Their presence is detected, and the Sound Four attacks them before they can make a move.

Episode 112 "A sudden split among friends!? Platoon Shikamaru's great crisis"
Although the Sound Four's attack seems to force the retrieval team on the defensive, Shikamaru intended to be caught and uses the opportunity to capture the Sound Four with his shadow. They manage to escape, and Jirobo captures the retrieval team in a dome of rocks. As the other Sound Four members go on ahead, Jirobo absorbs the Konoha ninja's chakra. Before their chakra is completely absorbed, Choji manages to break out of the dome, freeing the team.

Episode 113 "At full power! Burn Choji"
Freed, Choji volunteers to stay behind and deal with Jirobo to give the rest of the team a chance to catch up to the other Sound Four members. As the team goes on, Choji eats the first of the Akimichi's Three Colored Pills, increasing his strength. Doing so proves enough to overpower Jirobo, forcing him to advance his cursed seal to its first level. With Jirobo now having the upperhand, Choji takes the second Akimichi pill.

With the second pill in his system, Choji uses Super Multi-Size Technique to dramatically increase his size and fall upon Jirobo. To escape the crushing effects of Choji's increased bulk, Jirobo advances to level 2 of his cursed seal, enabling him to lift Choji and toss him aside. Outmatched, Choji considers taking the last pill. While all of the pills he has taken thus far have been harmful to him, the third almost guarantees death to the user. Faced with death either way, Choji takes the pill, allowing him to easily overpower and kill Jirobo. His battle won, Choji begins to follow his friends' path, though falls unconscious before making it very far.

When the retrieval team catches up with the Sound Four, they are quickly caught in Kidomaru's webs. As Kidomaru is about to finish off Naruto, Neji frees himself from the webbings and saves the rest of the team. Deciding to deal with Kidomaru himself, Neji instructs the others to go on without him, and begins to fight Kidomaru. Although Kidomaru soon believes himself to have the advantage, Neji readies his Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms to prove him wrong.

Episode 116 "360 field of vision, The Byakugan's blind spot"
Kidomaru manages to shield himself form the attack, and flees to the safety of the neighboring trees. Deciding to attack Neji from a distance, Kidomaru advances his seal to its first level and sends multiple spiders to attack Neji. Neji is able to repel them all, though Kidomaru notices a delayed reaction in some of Neji's blocks. He theorizes that Neji's defenses has a blind spot, and attacks him further from this blind spot. His theory is proven correct as Neji is unable to block the attack. Believing himself to have found Neji's weakness, Kidomaru prepares to finish the battle.

Episode 117 "The reason not to lose"
After advancing his cursed seal to its second state and creating a bow and arrow with his webs, Kidomaru begins taking shots at Neji's blind spot. Neji is able to block the attacks enough to keep them from hitting vital areas, though is still left heavily damaged with each of Kidomaru's attacks. Ready to finish the battle, Kidomaru prepares his most deadly arrow for use, and fires it at Neji. Neji takes the arrow full force, though already knowing of his blind spot moves at the last second to keep the arrow from piercing his heart. With Kidomaru's arrow connected to him by a web, Neji sends his chakra into the web, paralyzing Kidomaru. As Kidomaru lies helpless, Neji approaches him and deals a finishing blow. His injuries too severe, Neji collapses, leaving the retrieval of Sasuke up to the others.

Episode 118 "Rescue~To be in time for the container"
Orochimaru, his body left useless after his failed invasion of Konoha, earnestly waits for Sasuke so that he can switch to Sasuke's body. Although he puts it off for as long as he can, hoping that the Sound Four will arrive in time, his body brings him too much pain and he is forced to switch to the body of one of his prisoners. Elsewhere, the retrieval team catches up with the Sound Four and engages them in battle.

Episode 119 "Mistake! The new enemy"
Soon after the battle begins, Kiba and his dog, Akamaru, fall off a cliff with Sakon. Shikamaru engages Tayuya while Naruto goes after Kimimaro Kaguya, who is carrying Sasuke's coffin. Desperate to get Sasuke back, Naruto begins tapping into the demon fox's chakra to engage Kimimaro. As the battle between Shikamaru and Tayuya begins, Tayuya summons three creatures to help her in combat. With Kiba and Sakon's battle already underway elsewhere, Sakon's brother Ukon reveals himself to help Sakon fight.

Episode 120 "Roar! Howl! The ultimate tag"
As Tayuya guides her three beasts after Shikamaru, she activates the first level of her cursed seal to make controlling them easier. Naruto too begins his battle, creating a great deal of shadow clones with which to attack Kimimaro, though Kimimaro is able to defeat the clones by the dozens. As the fight between Kiba and Akamaru vs. Sakon and Ukon rages on, Ukon pushes his cursed seal into its second level. Recognizing the huge increase in strength that this allows the brothers, Kiba and Akamaru combine to become a giant double-headed wolf. The combined beast charges towards Sakon and Ukon, though the brothers are able to summon a defense to block the attack. As the wolf transformation disperses, Akamaru is attacked and left heavily injured, and Ukon merges himself with Kiba's body. Needing to get rid of Ukon to save Akamaru, Kiba stabs himself in the stomach, causing him and Ukon to start coughing up blood.

Episode 121 "Each respective battles"
Ukon separates from Kiba and rejoins with Sakon so that he can recover. Kiba finds Akamaru, and the two flee down river, hoping to escape the brothers. Naruto, meanwhile, is unable to make a dent in Kimimaro, and his shadow clones are still rapidly defeated before they can land a blow. Shikamaru, elsewhere, believes to have picked up on the movements of Tayuya's creatures, though she quickly has them switch actions before Shikamaru can act.

Despite Tayuya's efforts, Shikamaru has devised a plan to defeat her creatures. Using a flash bang to lengthen the shadows in the area, Shikamaru captures the creatures and prepares to turn them against Tayuya. To prevent this, Tayuya calls off the creatures, making them disperse. Despite this, Tayuya is captured by Shikamaru's shadow, forcing her to advance her seal to its second state to escape. With Tayuya now strong enough to overpower his shadow, Shikamaru decides instead to use his shadow for attack, and attempts to use his shadow to strangle her.

Episode 123 "Meet the Leaf's green beast!"
As Naruto starts getting frustrated with his lack of progress, Sasuke's cursed seal finally reaches it second level, allowing him to exit his coffin and go on ahead. Kimimaro prevents Naruto from going after him, though the arrival of the newly recovered Rock Lee forces him to let Naruto go. Lee and Kimimaro begin exchanging blows, though Kimimaro's unique control over his bones makes things difficult for Lee. Soon after the fight begins, Lee asks for a timeout so that he can take his medicine. Kimimaro agrees, and Lee drinks the contents of his medicine bottle. Because Lee grabbed sake instead of medicine when he set out to help the retrieval team, Lee is immediately intoxicated, and attacks Kimimaro in a drunken frenzy.

Episode 124 "Beast explosion! Burst open, blow off and break through!"
In his drunken form, Lee's movements are unpredictable and Kimimaro is left unable to dodge his attacks. As Lee begins gaining the advantage in the fight, Kimimaro is forced to use his more powerful abilities. Lee, however, begins to sober up, and reverts to his previous state, easily being outclassed by Kimimaro. Kimimaro prepares to finish Lee off, Tayuya starts fighting Shikamaru's shadow, and Sakon and Ukon find Kiba and Akamaru. Before any of the Sound Four members can attack the Konoha ninja, Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro arrive at each battle site to take care of the Sound Four members themselves.

Episode 125 "The Leaf's allies The Sand's shinobi"
The arrival of the Sand ninja surprises the Konoha retrieval team and the Sound Four. Although the Konoha ninja ask their saviors to flee, each refuses, having been asked to come to help by Tsunade. Sakon and Ukon ridicule Kankuro and his puppet, causing him to quickly trap both in a second of his puppets and kill them. With Temari's arrival, Tayuya escapes to the surrounding trees for cover, though Temari's fan cuts through the forest, eliminating Tayuya with ease.

Lee, not wanting help, tries to bypass Gaara and attack Kimimaro. Because Lee is still recovering from his operation, Gaara forces him to sit. Using his sand, Gaara tries to crush Kimimaro, though by activating his cursed seal Kimimaro survives the attack. Calling upon a greater amount of sand, Gaara tries to bury Kimimaro, though advancing his cursed seal to level 2 allows Kimimaro to survive and escape this as well.

Episode 127 "A never-give-up blow! Dance of the Seedling Fern"
Recognizing the potency of Gaara's attack and the strength of his defenses, Kimimaro hardens a bone around his arm into the shape of a drill. With this, his strongest weapon, Kimimaro charges at Gaara, though Gaara's final defense proves too much for it and it shatters. Calling upon the sand in the ground, Gaara pulls Kimimaro deep underground, confining him there until his eventual death. As Kimimaro sinks, he creates a forest of bones to burst from the ground, which Gaara is able to help Lee avoid at the last second. As the two sit relieved to have won, Kimimaro appears from one of the bones with his bone drill for an attack. His disease gets the best of him at the last second, and he dies before he can finish Gaara and Lee. Elsewhere, Naruto has caught up to Sasuke.

Episode 128 "Unreachable outcry"
Naruto asks Sasuke if he is willing to turn his back on all of his friends in Konoha for the simple matter of getting stronger. Sasuke says yes and starts to walk away, enraging Naruto. Determined to bring Sasuke back to his senses and to Konoha, Naruto grabs hold of him, though he is easily repelled. After creating some shadow clones, Naruto tries using force again, though Sasuke scorches the Narutos with a burst of fire.

Episode 129 "Itachi and Sasuke The far away existence"
Naruto rises from the flames unharmed, and Sasuke begins to remember his childhood and his reasons for becoming obsessed with power. Sasuke's childhood was spent living in his brother, Itachi's, shadow. Being the prodigy of the clan, Itachi received all the attention from their father, leaving Sasuke to live his life trying to earn his father's recognition. Itachi, aware of Sasuke's efforts, did what he could to redirect some of their father's attention to Sasuke, but saw little success. In time, the members of the Uchiha clan began to suspect Itachi of being a murderer, and Itachi started openly attacking and disrespecting the clan.

As Sasuke and his father spent more time together, his father told him not to follow in Itachi's footsteps, the former prodigy having lost the clan's confidence. With his father's recognition, Sasuke put even more time into his training, determined to get better than Itachi.

After Jiraiya knocks out Ebisu, Naruto Uzumaki is left without a tutor. After a great deal of chasing, Naruto manages to catch Jiraiya and win him over with the Sexy Technique. While Jiraiya oversees Naruto's training, he quickly realizes that Naruto is the container of the demon fox. Jiraiya undoes the seal that Orochimaru had placed on Naruto in the forest, after which Naruto quickly grasps the concept of walking on water. Afterwards, Jiraiya speaks with Naruto about his two kinds of chakra.

Episode 54 "Summoning Jutsu: Wisdom of the Toad Sage!"
That night, Dosu Kinuta, a finalist for the Chunin Exams, approaches Gaara, another finalist. Dosu intends to kill Gaara, but Gaara butchers him before he has a chance. Observing from a distance, Baki and Kabuto Yakushi confer about the planned invasion of Konohagakure by Sunagakure and Otogakure. Baki kills the eavesdropping Hayate Gekko immediately afterwards. The next day, Naruto resumes his training with Jiraiya. He signs a scroll that will allow him to summon toads. Upon trying to summon a toad, Naruto only manages to summon a tadpole.

Despite the injuries that have taken away his hopes of becoming a ninja, Lee trains to regain his strength. The training causes him too much pain, and he passes out. Elsewhere, the many finalists continue their training, with Naruto finally managing to summon a tadpole with hind-legs.

Unable to stop himself from falling, Naruto enters his subconsciousness and converses with the demon fox, asking for a donation of its strength. Determined to prove himself, Naruto rides atop Gamabunta's until sunset, and all the while Gamabunta tries to shake him off. Although Naruto doesn't have enough strength to last until sunset, he earns Gamabunta's respect. Gamabunta takes Naruto to the hospital to rest.

Episode 58 "Hospital Besieged: The Evil Hand Revealed!"
When Naruto awakens, he finds Shikamaru Nara sitting by his bed, bringing him a basket of fruit. Elsewhere in the hospital, Gaara approaches a sleeping Rock Lee, determined to kill Lee and finish what he started during the preliminaries. He is stopped by Naruto and Shikamaru. When questioned why he attempted to finish the job, Gaara explains that his reason for existing is to kill everyone, and reveals that he, like Naruto, was alone for much of his childhood, hated and feared by the villagers for being a host of a tailed beast. Gaara prepares to kill Naruto and Shikamaru as well, but is stopped by the arrival of Might Guy, Lee's sensei, and leaves.

On the day of the finals, Naruto makes his way to the arena. Along the way, he encounters and converses with Hinata Hyuga. Hinata reassures him of his talents, removing any doubts he had about the finals. Naruto thanks Hinata and goes on his way. As he gets closer to the arena, Naruto meets Konohamaru, who tries to use a number of shortcuts to help Naruto get to the arena faster. The shortcuts end up being ineffective and time consuming, but Naruto makes it to the stadium in time.

Naruto creates more shadow clones, and this time manages to sneak up on Neji. Before he can land a blow, Neji uses a powerful defensive technique, then takes the opportunity to block Naruto's chakra in the ensuing confusion. Even though he could no longer fight, Naruto refuses to give up. Neji then reveals the history of the Hyuga clan and how his father was killed to save the life of his uncle, due only to the fact that his father was born second. Neji goes on to elaborate his ideas that fate is determined at birth, and that no matter what one does, nobody can escape their destiny.

Episode 62 "A Failure's True Power"
Determined to prove Neji wrong, Naruto draws on the demon fox's strength, surprising many of the older ninja present for Naruto's ability to use and control the fox's chakra. Naruto attacks Neji with increased speed and strength, and the latter is only barely able to keep up. As the two forces collide, an explosion occurs, and the two are thrown into craters. Neji rises from his own, preparing to lecture his unconscious opponent. Naruto bursts from the ground beneath him and punches him in the jaw; the Naruto in the opposite pit was a shadow clone. Unable to get up, Neji berates himself for falling for Naruto's signature jutsu, to which Naruto explains that it was once his worst technique. After telling Neji to stop putting so much faith in fate, Naruto is declared the winner.

When Neji is taken away to recover, his uncle tries to tell Neji of the truth of his father's death, saying that he had given up his life to save his brother, not a member of the main house. Neji is unbelieving, but his reading his father's final letter and seeing his uncle bowing for forgiveness causes him to realize the truth. Meanwhile, the match between Sasuke Uchiha and Gaara is postponed due to Sasuke's absence, and the match between Shino Aburame and Kankuro is set to start. Kankuro forfeits, having expected the invasion of Konoha to have started before his match. The next combatants, Shikamaru and Temari, go down to the stadium.

Episode 64 "Zero Motivation: The Guy with Cloud Envy!"
Though initially unwilling, Shikamaru fights Temari because he refuses to lose to a girl. Shikamaru quickly studies the arena and its elements and comes up with a plan. Despite this, Temari has seen Shikamaru's primary attack in action and knows how it works. It appears that Temari is able to evade Shikamaru's technique and adapt to his tactics; however Shikamaru had been luring her to the tunnel Naruto created in the previous match. Shikamaru catches her in his trap through use of the tunnel and clearly has the match won, but he forfeits at the last second, claiming to have exerted too much chakra in capturing Temari to fight later battles.

Sasuke pursues them, eager to finish their battle. Preoccupied with fending off the invading forces, Kakashi instructs Sakura, who had managed to repel the sleeping-inducing genjutsu, to wake Naruto and Shikamaru.

Shikamaru volunteers to stall them to buy the others time and falls back. Once the Sound ninja get close enough, Shikamaru traps them with his shadow, though finds that he has only captured eight. Attempting to kill the eight, Shikamaru discovers the ninth's location, but lacks the chakra to trap him. As his shadow recedes and the eight freed ninja prepare to kill Shikamaru, Asuma Sarutobi, Shikamaru's sensei, arrives and defeats them as well as the ninth ninja, saving Shikamaru.

The Hokage battle begins, and all three Hokages exchange varying elemental attacks. To help him in the uneven fight, the Third summons Enma and has him transform into a staff with the ability to alter its size. In response, Orochimaru brings out his Kusanagi, and the two exchange blows. The Third is repelled by the First and Second, and he quickly discovers that they cannot be permanently maimed or killed in their present state. Orochimaru then shows the Third the fruits of his quest to gain immortality. Peeling away his face, Orochimaru reveals the face of a girl whose body he has taken; Orochimaru's key to living forever is to take the bodies of others for all eternity.

Staying alive through sheer will alone, the Hokage reveals that the Dead Demon Consuming Seal is a self-sacrifical technique and that he would die anyways. Meanwhile, Sasuke again catches up with Gaara, and Kankuro prepares to hold Sasuke off while Gaara escapes with his sister. Before they can begin, Shino Aburame arrives to fight Kankuro, allowing Sasuke to proceed.

Leaving Shino to deal with Kankuro, Sasuke continues his pursuit of Gaara. Kankuro attacks Shino with his puppet, using its many hidden weapons to catch Shino by surprise. Shino is able to dodge the attacks through the use of his destruction bugs, though eventually makes the mistake of inhaling some of the puppet's poison. As the battle goes on, Shino directs his bugs to Kankuro's location. They consume his chakra once they get there, causing Kankuro to collapse. The battle won, Shino collapses due to Kankuro's poison. Sasuke catches up with Gaara as Shino's battle ends, and the two resume their match.

While Gaara was able to survive the blast, he lost the only person who ever cared for him. From that point on, Gaara came to love only himself and starting living off of killing others. Returning to the present day, Gaara quickly restrains Sakura with a claw made of sand and slowly squeezes her. Determined to save Sasuke and Sakura at all costs, Naruto takes Gaara on.

Episode 78 "Naruto's Ninja Handbook"
Naruto's determination to save his friends abolishes the fear Gaara instilled in him earlier. Rejuvinated, Naruto summons two thousand shadow clones and performs a large-scale combo attack. To fend off the attack, Gaara completes his Shukaku transformation: He becomes the beast in its giant form and destroys all of the shadow clones in the process. Using his sand, Gaara tries to crush Naruto, but Naruto summons Gamabunta to break out of the sand at the last second. Gamabunta and Gaara exchange blows, but Gaara forces himself to sleep and allows the spirit of the Shukaku to take over his body. Gamabunta is forced on the defensive. Needing to get close to Shukaku to wake Gaara up, Naruto and Gamabunta transform into a giant nine-tailed fox to fight.

Episode 27 "The Chunin Exam Stage 2: The Forest of Death"
Anko briefs the candidates on their goal for the second portion of the exam. All teams are given one of two scrolls: a Heaven Scroll or an Earth Scroll. They will spend the next five days in the forest and compete with other teams to get one of each scroll by any means necessary, at which point they will head to the tower in the center of the forest. Soon enough, the proctor hands out scrolls and opens the forest gates. None of the teams waste any time - Naruto's team is attacked immediately.

Episode 28 "Eat or Be Eaten: Panic in the Forest"
Sasuke quickly drives away the attacking Rain Genin. Their moment of peace is short lived, as a powerful gust of wind separates Naruto from his team. Just as he reorients himself, Naruto is swallowed whole by a giant snake. In the mean time, Sasuke and Sakura are quickly disabled by a Grass ninja. Before they even fight, Sasuke and Sakura have visions of their own deaths upon looking into his eyes, paralyzing them with fear. Regaining his composure just before a would-be fatal blow, Sasuke flees with Sakura. The ninja pursues them, but Naruto, having killed the snake, arrives in time to save both.

Despite Naruto's timely appearance, Sasuke is more than willing to sacrifice their scroll to ensure their survival. Before he can do so, Naruto takes the scroll from him, believing that the real Sasuke would never willingly give up. Naruto begins fighting the Grass ninja and his snakes, tapping into the demon fox's chakra in the process. The ninja, recognizing Naruto as the demon fox's container, seals the demon fox's chakra, rendering him unconscious. Naruto's efforts, however, rejuvenate Sasuke with determination, and he prepares to battle the Grass ninja.

Episode 30 "The Sharingan Revived: Dragon Flame Jutsu!"
Sasuke and the Grass ninja engage in combat. After a long, difficult battle, Sasuke seemingly ends the battle with blast of fire to the ninja's face. However, the ninja awakens with his face partially melted off, revealing another face underneath. Extending his neck, he bites Sasuke and leaves behind a cursed seal. The ninja reveals himself to be Orochimaru, wishes Sasuke luck in surviving, and leaves. Anko finds Orochimaru and attacks him, intent on killing her former sensei for his crimes, even at the potential cost of her own life.

Episode 31 "Bushy Brow's Pledge: Undying Love and Protection"
Sakura takes care of her teammates, both of whom are still unconscious from Orochimaru's attack. The three Sound Genin that attacked Kabuto in the test room, sent by Orochimaru to kill Sasuke, observe their target from a distance, and eventually approach Sakura. Despite Sakura's best efforts at laying traps, the Sound Genin evade her obstacles and prepare to attack. A stray Rock Lee appears to protect Sakura. Though he holds his own for a while, he attempts his Front Lotus, an attack that uses more muscle strength than the average human body produces at once. The attack proves ineffective, and the weakened Lee is quickly knocked out.

Episode 32 "Sakura Blossoms!"
With Lee unconscious, Sakura has to defend by herself. One of the Sound Genin, Kin Tsuchi, takes hold of her hair and ridicules her for spending so much time on her looks, this remark spurs her into cutting her hair to free herself from Kin's grasp. Freed, Sakura battles Zaku Abumi, though he quickly gains the advantage. Despite this, Sakura perseveres, causing Team 10 to come to her aide.

Episode 33 "Battle Formation: Ino-Shika-Cho!"
Team 10 battles the Sound Genin, and Ino possesses Kin, rendering both of them unable to fight. However, the Sound Genin still manage to hold their own. Just as Lee's teammates appear to join the fight, Sasuke awakens, the cursed seal given to him by Orochimaru engulfing him. Noticing Sakura's wounds, Sasuke begins attacking Zaku in retaliation, eventually breaking both of his arms without mercy. As Sasuke turns his attention to the final Sound Genin, Dosu Kinuta, Sakura catches him in an embrace begging him to stop. The cursed seal recedes, and the Sound Genin flee.

Episode 34 "Akamaru Trembles: Gaara's Cruel Strength!"
As Team 7, Team 10, and Team Guy recover, Team 8 witnesses Gaara mercilessly kill a team of Rain Genin. Although Gaara prepares to turn his attention to Team 8, his siblings persuade him to leave them alone. Gaara's team shatters the record for reaching the tower, reaching their destination in about an hour and Gaara does not have so much as a speck of dirt on his clothes.

Episode 35 "The Scroll's Secret: No Peeking Allowed"
In need of a second scroll, an awakened Naruto contemplates forging a new scroll, though he'll first need to read the scroll he already has. Before he does so, Kabuto arrives to stop him, citing that those who read the scroll are rendered unconscious until the exam's end; a rival team tries to open their scroll, and suffers this fate. Kabuto, separated from his teammates, accompanies Team 7 to the tower at the center of the forest. Along the way, the group encounters a disorienting genjutsu set by the teammates of the Rain Genin Sasuke had earlier defeated. By the time they realize that they are not getting any closer to the center of the forest, it is too late; they are attacked by a number of clones.

The team realizes soon enough that the clones are not physical; they are in fact another genjutsu. In order to draw out the assailants, Naruto disguises several of his shadow clones as his teammates and fights the enemy clones all night. When the Rain Genin team believe that the entire team was exhausted from combat, Kabuto, Sakura, and Sasuke corner them. After a brief struggle, Naruto knocks out the enemies and takes their scroll, at which point they head to the tower and meet with Kabuto's team. Unknown to Naruto and friends, Kabuto submits all of the data he gathered on them to Orochimaru.

Hayate reveals that an unusually large number of Genin got through the second stage of the exam. Before they can proceed to the final stage, a series of one-on-one preliminary matches will have to take place so that only the winners of each match can proceed. Kabuto drops out immediately upon the notice, blaming his withdrawal on an injury sustained from an earlier part of the test; however, he worries to himself that if he participated, the "old [Kabuto] might come out." Sasuke wins using his new move: the Lion Combo, demonstrating his control over the cursed seal in the process. Kakashi takes him to an isolated location to hinder the cursed seal, only to be confronted by Orochimaru as he finishes. Back at the tower, Shino Aburame and Zaku Abumi begin the next match.

Sakura and Ino's battle rages on. With both nearly out of chakra, Ino tries a desperate move: her Mind Body Switch Technique. She succeeds and takes control over Sakura's body. As she prepares to force Sakura to forfeit, Naruto cheers Sakura on and inadvertently awakens Inner Sakura, who forces Ino out of her body. Both drained of their chakra, the rivals knock each other out in one climactic punch, resulting in a double knockout. Neither candidate advances to the final stage.

Episode 43 "Killer Kunoichi and a Shaky Shikamaru"
The next match is between Temari and Tenten. Tenten's weapon summonings are no match for Temari's wind-based attacks, so she loses to Temari's Cutting Whirlwind Technique. Shikamaru Nara and Kin Tsuchi take to the battlefield next. While it appears that Kin is on the verge of winning due to hallucinations induced by her bells, Shikamaru sneaks his shadow under threads held by his opponent, activating the Shadow Imitation Technique and taking control of her. At that point, he knocks her out by making her slam her head into a wall. The next combatants are revealed to be Naruto and Kiba Inuzuka.

Naruto is immediately at a disadvantage, as Kiba fights with the assistance of his dog, Akamaru. Despite these odds, Naruto gains the upper hand early on by using Kiba's overconfidence against him. Once Kiba calms down, he regains control of the battle. He and Akamaru consume special pills that restore and double their chakra. Once powered up, Kiba and Akamaru use a combination of Four Legs Technique and Beast Human Clone to overwhelm Naruto with two beastly opponents. Although Naruto falls, his desire to win only increases with Kiba's taunts.

Using Kiba's own smokescreen as a cover, Naruto disguises himself as a third Kiba through use of the Transformation Technique and tricks Kiba into knocking Akamaru out, which only serves to anger Kiba. Naruto, however, is still at a disadvantage due to Kiba's pill-enhanced chakra and superior speed. Furthermore, Orochimaru's seal disrupts his already low chakra reserves, hindering Naruto's ability to build up enough chakra for his new technique. Kiba's onslaught ends when Naruto accidentally flatulates in Kiba's face, stunning him due to his enhanced sense of smell. Naruto then finishes the battle with Naruto Uzumaki Combo, a technique he based off of Sasuke's winning move that utilizes his shadow clones.

Episode 46 "Byakugan Battle: Hinata Grows Bold!"
Hinata's match is against Neji Hyuga, her cousin from the branch house of the the Hyuga clan. Neji intimidates and berates his cousin, and she seems ready to forfeit. Tired of his taunts, Naruto cheers Hinata on, giving her the strength to fight back. Hinata and Neji fight each other using Hyuga-style Gentle Fist taijutsu, which uses bursts of chakra to damage the opponent's internal organs. Episode 47 "A Failure Stands Tall!"
Pulling back Hinata's sleeve, Neji reveals that he had hit several points on her arm called tenketsu, special glands that produce and maintain the flow of chakra, during their close combat. With all of them tapped, Hinata's chakra flow to her hand is effectively cut off and her blow to Neji's heart has no effect. Neji continues his assault, but Hinata continues to stand up, inspired by Naruto. She tells him that she believes that he is suffering more from fighting his destiny. Angered, Neji attempts a fatal blow, but several observing Jonin halt him. Hinata collapses into cardiac arrest shortly after, and Naruto vows to avenge her.

After a long wait, Rock Lee is set to fight against Gaara. At first, it seems as though Lee's Strong Fist taijutsu is ineffective because of Gaara's Shield of Sand, a wall of sand that automatically rises to protect Gaara regardless of his will. Lee soon reveals that he was wearing heavy leg weights and removes them, allowing him to move faster than Gaara's sand. Lee attempts his Front Lotus.

Episode 50 "The Fifth Gate: A Splendid Ninja is Born!"
Lee's speed proves too much for Gaara, and his sand is no longer able to form a shield fast enough to be of use. Lee opens the Fifth Gate and uses his most powerful attack, Reverse Lotus. Unfortunately for Lee, Gaara survives this final blow by softening his fall with sand and uses the sand to crush Lee's left arm and leg. Gaara moves his sand to finish Lee, but Guy jumps in to protect his student. Lee, though unconscious due to the pain, rises to continue the battle, his desire to win fueling his broken body. Guy cries for Lee's dedication, and Lee is taken away to recover. The medical ninja announce that Lee's injuries are too severe to be completely healed and that he will never be able to fight as a ninja again. Guy regrets teaching Lee such dangerous techniques, but vacates the ring for the final match between Choji Akimichi and Dosu Kinuta.

Choji quickly loses to Dosu, concluding the preliminaries. The nine qualifying Genin are assigned opponents, and they are all allowed to leave for a month of training before the finals. Elsewhere, Kabuto prepares to kidnap Sasuke under Orochimaru's orders, but he is stopped by Kakashi and is forced to retreat. Naruto later meets with Kakashi in hopes of training with him for the finals. Kakashi, planning on training Sasuke instead, offers Ebisu as a trainer for Naruto.

Episode 1 "Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!"
After failing to graduate from the Ninja Academy for the third year in a row, Naruto Uzumaki is approached by Mizuki, an instructor at the Academy. Mizuki tells Naruto that if he can steal the Scroll of Seals and learn one of the forbidden jutsu within it, then he will be allowed to graduate. Naruto eagerly does so, and retreats to the neighboring woods to train while the villagers look for him. Iruka Umino soon finds Naruto, and after Naruto explains why he stole the scroll, Iruka realizes what Mizuki is planning. Mizuki attacks the two, having intended to steal the scroll from Naruto for his own use. As Iruka defends Naruto, Mizuki tells Naruto of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox within him and claims that Iruka hates him for it. Naruto runs off, but stays close by and listens to Iruka and Mizuki's conversation. In doing so, Naruto learns that Iruka doesn't hate him, and as such comes to Iruka's rescue. Using his newly learned Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, Naruto defeats Mizuki. For learning such an advanced jutsu, Iruka allows Naruto to graduate, fulfilling Mizuki's promise.

Episode 2 "My Name Is Konohamaru!"
Naruto meets Konohamaru, the Third Hokage's grandson, during one of the child's attempts at sneak-attacking his grandfather. The attack fails, and Konohamaru believes Naruto to be the one responsible. As such, Konohamaru asks to become Naruto's disciple in the hopes of being able to defeat his grandfather and gain the title of Hokage. Naruto accepts, and begins teaching Konohamaru the Sexy Technique. Konohamaru's tutor, Ebisu, soon finds them and tries to take Konohamaru. To stop Ebisu, Konohamaru uses the Sexy Technique, and when Ebisu is left unfazed Naruto uses his Harem Technique to knock Ebisu out. Konohamaru questions why he was unable to defeat Ebisu by himself, and Naruto replies that becoming Hokage requires a great deal of work for which there are no shortcuts. Konohamaru denounces their student-teacher relationship on the grounds that they are both rivals for the title of Hokage.

Episode 4 "Pass or Fail: Survival Test"
Team 7 meets their team leader, Kakashi Hatake, who tests the three to see if they'll be allowed to become Genin. Kakashi explains that in order to pass, the student has to retrieve one of two bells on their leader's belt by any means necessary; at most, two can pass. As the test gets underway, Naruto decides that attacking Kakashi outright is the best approach. Naruto's attacks are futile against Kakashi, who easily defends, despite casually reading a graphic novel the entire time. In the end, Naruto falls for a snare trap, prompting Kakashi to come out and lecture him. Sasuke then takes the opportunity to attack Kakashi.

Episode 5 "You Failed! Kakashi's Final Decision"
As Naruto hangs from the tree, Sasuke independently attempts his own efforts at defeating Kakashi, though none prove successful and he is defeated. All the while, Sakura follows Sasuke in the hopes of winning his affection, though she too falls prey to Kakashi. Meanwhile, Naruto escapes from the snare and attempts to steal some lunch, though is caught and restrained by Kakashi. Kakashi lectures the three on their inability to work together, and then allows Sakura and Sasuke to have lunch. As punishment for his attempt, Naruto is not allowed to eat, and anyone who feeds him will fail. Despite this, Sasuke and Sakura feed Naruto anyway, realizing that Naruto will need to be at full strength if they are to work together. Kakashi appears when they come to their decision and passes them; the purpose of the test was to teach the three that protecting one's friends is more important than following rules.

Episode 6 "A Dangerous Mission! Journey to the Land of Waves!"
After Team 7 completes a few miscellaneous missions, they are assigned to escort Tazuna back to the Land of Waves. Early in the mission, the group is attacked by two enemy Chunin. Naruto panics and gets slashed by a toxic claw, while Sasuke deals with the attackers quite efficiently and taunts Naruto. Once the attackers are restrained, Naruto bleeds out the poison he received by stabbing his wound with a kunai, vowing upon the pain in his hand to never be a burden to his friends again.

Episode 7 "The Assassin of the Mist!"
Knowing that being attacked by enemy ninja is not supposed to happen on such a routine mission, Kakashi questions Tazuna. Tazuna explains that the Land of Waves has been taken over by a shipping magnate named Gato, who has impoverished all the people of the country by monopolizing the shipping industry. The only way to revitalize the economy is for Tazuna to build a bridge to the mainland that can bypass Gato's shipping monopoly, which Gato is trying to stop by force. Kakashi decides to continue the mission, but suggests that they must be more cautious. Soon afterwards, the group is attacked by Zabuza Momochi. Kakashi recognizes Zabuza as a formidable opponent and reveals his Sharingan eye. Using his Sharingan to copy Zabuza's Water Clone Technique, Kakashi is able to have a few rounds of water clone encounters with Zabuza.

Episode 8 "The Oath of Pain"
Eventually, Kakashi is caught off guard and is captured in a prison of water. To act upon his former promise of not backing down from a fight, Naruto attacks Zabuza. After a seemingly failed Shadow Clone attack, Naruto passes Sasuke a fuuma shuriken, which he throws at Zabuza. Zabuza catches the shuriken and finds another to have been hiding in the shadow of the first, which he easily dodges. However, the second shuriken is truly a transformed Naruto, who throws a kunai at Zabuza. With no other choice, Zabuza releases the water prison to dodge the attack.

Episode 9 "Kakashi: Sharingan Warrior!"
Kakashi and Zabuza resume their fight. Due to his Sharingan, Kakashi is able to take the upper hand and defeat Zabuza with his own attack. Just as Kakashi is about to make the final blow, a masked boy named Haku arrives and appears to kill Zabuza by throwing a number of needles at Zabuza's neck. Haku claims to be a Hunter-nin sent to kill Zabuza and takes his body to protect the village's secrets. Temporarily satisfied, Kakashi collapses seconds later as a result of fatigue from his overuse of the Sharingan.

Episode 10 "The Forest of Chakra"
Kakashi rests and recovers at Tazuna's home. There, he makes the observation that Zabuza's death was odd, and concludes that it was an act. Elsewhere, Haku revives Zabuza, who promises to crush Kakashi when next they meet. Both Kakashi and Zabuza need to rest a week to recover. With Zabuza's return a likely outcome, Kakashi takes Team 7 to the ~Censored~ woods for chakra training, where they learn to walk up vertical surfaces. Sakura performs this perfectly the first time, but Naruto and Sasuke require extra training. Naruto asks Sakura for advice, and Sakura agrees to help him. Kakashi makes the observation that Naruto is finally getting a good grasp on teamwork.

Episode 11 "The Land Where a Hero Once Lived"
Sakura is left in charge of protecting Tazuna while Naruto and Sasuke continue their training. As Naruto begins to catch up to Sasuke, Sasuke casually asks to know what advice Sakura had given Naruto, but Naruto refuses to tell him. During dinner one night, Sakura asks about a torn picture that Inari, Tazuna's grandson, had been looking at. Tazuna explains that the man in the missing portion of the picture was Kaiza, Inari's idol, father-figure, and the hero of the village. He explains that Kaiza's death at Gato's orders crushed the Inari and the villagers, making them lose faith in the possibility of a "hero". Naruto rushes off to continue his training with renewed determination.

Episode 12 "Battle on the Bridge! Zabuza Returns!"
In the woods, Naruto encounters Haku, whom he doesn't recognize. While the two discuss their dreams, Haku explains that one's strength is at its greatest when protecting a loved one. Naruto agrees with this statement, remembering all of the people who have protected him. Sasuke and Naruto soon master tree-climbing, and the two return to Tazuna's home. There, Inari deems their training as pointless, drawing Naruto's final straw. The two engage in a dispute that ends in Naruto calling the boy a self-pitying coward. Kakashi meets with Inari and explains that Naruto wanted him to regain hope and courage, comforting the child. The next morning, Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura escort Tazuna to work, leaving Naruto behind to rest. Upon arriving at the bridge, they find Tazuna's workers unconscious and the air getting thicker with mist. Zabuza and a masked Haku reveal themselves.

Episode 13 "Haku's Secret Jutsu: Crystal Ice Mirrors"
At Tazuna's house, two of Gato's thugs arrive to kidnap Inari's mother. Inspired by Naruto's story, Inari attempts to save his mother by himself. Naruto surprises the thugs and congratulates Inari for finally standing up for himself. Naruto then leaves to join the rest of his team. At the bridge, Sasuke battles with Haku. Haku quickly notices Sasuke's improvement and decides to use his trump card: Demonic Ice Mirrors. Haku traps Sasuke in his cage of mirrors and rapidly shoots ice needles at him.

Episode 14 "The Number One Hyperactive, Knucklehead Ninja Joins the Fight!"
Naruto eventually arrives and manages a sneak attack on Haku. Although Zabuza tries to attack Naruto, Haku asks to be the one to fight him, and Zabuza agrees. Trying to help Sasuke, Naruto enters the cage of mirrors, becoming trapped as well.

Episode 15 "Zero Visibility: The Sharingan Shatters"
Naruto and Sasuke both attempt to destroy the ice mirrors, though both are unsuccessful. This turn of events leads Kakashi to believe that Haku is using a kekkei genkai. He once again reveals his Sharingan in an attempt to quickly end the battle. Zabuza explains that he has learned how to defeat the Sharingan and disappears into the mist. Zabuza strikes, now attacking with his eyes closed, effectively making the Sharingan useless. Zabuza attempts to finish off Tazuna, and Kakashi blocks the attack as a human shield at the last second.

Episode 16 "The Broken Seal"
Naruto and Sasuke are left heavily wounded in their ongoing fight with Haku. However, Sasuke is starting to dodge Haku's attacks and protect Naruto at the same time. As a member of the Uchiha clan, Sasuke has finally awoken his own Sharingan, allowing him to see Haku's movements with ease. Haku goes for a finishing blow upon Naruto, but Sasuke rushes to Naruto's side to stop the attack, taking an apparently fatal hit in the process. When Naruto asks why Sasuke saved him, he claims that it was merely instinct, and falls into Naruto's arms. After admitting that he had promised to not die before killing his brother, Sasuke stops responding. Naruto's anger triggers a change: visible red chakra pours out of his body, which Haku notes is pure evil. Naruto mutates, healing his wounds and sporting claws, fangs, and slitted pupils; the demon fox has been unleashed.

Episode 17 "White Past: Hidden Ambition"
Kakashi senses Naruto's chakra and recognizes it as that of the demon fox, and decides he needs to quickly end the fight. Haku, realizing the danger Naruto now imposes, tries to retreat, though Naruto's increased speed and strength prevent this. Delivering a punch to Haku's face, Haku is sent through the ice mirrors, defeating the jutsu. Before Naruto deals a finishing blow, Haku's mask breaks away, revealing the face of the boy he'd met earlier and stopping Naruto's attack mid punch. Haku realizes that his defeat means that he is of as much use to Zabuza as "a broken tool". Believing that he has lost his purpose for living, he pleads for Naruto to kill him. Meanwhile, Kakashi summons a number of dogs to find and restrain Zabuza. Kakashi gathers chakra to his hand and charges up his Lightning Blade.

Episode 18 "The Weapons Known as Shinobi"
Elsewhere, Inari goes door-to-door in an attempt to rally support for taking down Gato and his men. The villagers refuse, not wanting to fight back anymore. Once he gets home, Inari's mother pleads for him not to go, though Inari insists that he must fight as Kaiza's son. Inari is startled to find many shadowy figures surrounding his door as he heads out. Elsewhere, and after much discussion, Haku finally convinces Naruto to kill him. Hesitantly, Naruto draws his kunai and rushes towards Sasuke's supposed killer. Sensing Zabuza's predicament, however, Haku escapes from Naruto at the last second and takes Kakashi's attack directly to his chest, being fatally wounded in the process. He also manages to cancel out Kakashi's summoning, removing Zabuza's restraints. Zabuza shows no sadness at his partner's death, even attempting to slash through Haku's corpse to cut Kakashi. Fighting with renewed resolve, Kakashi easily overpowers his Zabuza and disables both of his arms. Before the battle can end, Gato arrives with his men and revokes his contract with the weakened Zabuza.

Episode 19 "The Demon in the Snow"
After learning of Haku's death, Naruto berates Zabuza for his indifference about Haku's status. Zabuza reflects on Haku's innocence and dreams, and breaks into tears, conceding defeat. To repent, he rushes through Gato's forces with a kunai in his mouth and kills the businessman, but not without being impaled by numerous weapons. As Zabuza's life falters, Sasuke awakens, Haku never having meant to kill him or Naruto. Gato's men, no longer employed, prepare to loot the town, but are stopped by a mob of able-bodied citizens from the village, led by Inari. With help from Naruto and Kakashi's Shadow clone jutsu, the mob scares the men into retreating. Kakashi approaches Zabuza, who asks to see Haku one last time. Kakashi complies and lays Zabuza's broken body alongside Haku's, where Zabuza expresses his wish to be in the same afterlife as Haku. Haku and Zabuza are buried side by side with Zabuza's zanbatō sheathed in the ground as a memorial. The bridge is completed, and Team 7 prepares to leave. The team bids farewell to Tazuna's family while Inari and Naruto have an emotional moment. As they all disappear into the distance, Tazuna proclaims that the bridge will be called the Great Naruto Bridge to signify the strength that Naruto gave Inari who in turn gave to the whole town.

Episode 20 "A New Chapter Begins: The Chunin Exam!"
After a long day of accomplishing missions, Sakura and Naruto meet Konohamaru and his new friends, Moegi and Udon. After insulting Sakura, Konohamaru is forced to run for safety to escape Sakura's wrath, though ends up running into Kankuro, who does not take the accident lightly. Despite his sister Temari's advice and the pleas of all Konoha citizens present, Kankuro threatens to hurt Konohamaru. Sasuke, who had been watching from a distance, saves Konohamaru by pelting Kankuro with a rock. Kankuro prepares to counterattack, but is stopped dead cold by a command from his brother, Gaara.

Episode 21 "Identify Yourself: Powerful New Rivals"
Kankuro and Temari seem discomforted by Gaara's presence; at the same time, all of the Konoha ninja are startled by Gaara's stealthy appearance. As the siblings walk away, they explain that they came to Konoha from Sunagakure to take part in the Chunin Exam, a test to promote them to the next ninja rank. Kakashi later meets with Team 7 and informs them that he has nominated them for participation in the exam. As the three consider the matter on their own, each is attacked by a mysterious ninja, though each defeats him with little difficulty. The ninja later appears before Kakashi and reveals himself to be a transformed Iruka, reporting that all of the Genin tested qualify for the exam. As Team 7 proceeds to the site of the Chunin Exam, they meet Rock Lee and his teammates. Lee asks to Sakura to be his girlfriend. She refuses, and Team 7 goes on its way.

Episode 22 "Chunin Challenge: Rock Lee vs. Sasuke!"
As they leave, Rock Lee appears again and challenges Sasuke to a battle. Initially refusing, Sasuke changes his mind when Lee effortlessly defeats Naruto. Even Sasuke's Sharingan is no match for Lee's taijutsu. Before any harm can come to Sasuke, Lee's sensei and the self-proclaimed eternal rival of Kakashi Hatake, Might Guy, appears and stops the attack. After assigning Lee a punishment, the two leave, allowing Team 7 to proceed.

Episode 23 "Genin Takedown! All Nine Rookies Face Off!"
Upon arriving at the location of the first part of the exams, Team 7 meets with Team 10 members Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara, and Choji Akimichi as well as Team 8 members Shino Aburame, Hinata Hyuga, and Kiba Inuzuka. The group is befriended by exam veteran Kabuto Yakushi, who offers the nine information on their competitors. His remarks about the Land of Sound, however, touch a nerve with the Sound Genin present, and is attacked as such. Before the fight can progress, Ibiki Morino and several Chunin appear.

Episode 24 "Start Your Engines: The Chunin Exam Begins"
As everyone takes their seat, Ibiki explains that the the first phase of the exam will be a written test. Additionally, he explains that those caught cheating will have points deducted from their score, and that anyone who runs out of points will fail along with the rest of their team. When the questions on the test prove to be too difficult for a Genin to answer, it becomes clear that the purpose of the test is to cheat without being caught. As people begin to cheat, people also start getting caught and disqualified. Naruto, unaware that he is supposed to cheat, contemplates what he should do. Unable to answer any of the questions, he puts all his faith in the final question, which will be given fifteen minutes before the test's end.

Episode 25 "The Tenth Question: All or Nothing"
When the time for the last question arrives, the Genin are given an offer: forfeit now and be allowed to take the exam again next time, or accept the last question. However, failing the last question would mean never being allowed to take part in the exams again, and thus remaining a Genin forever. The possibility of never getting to take the test again proves too much for many students, and a number of teams leave. After struggling with his decision, Naruto declares in an inspiring monologue that he won't back down from the question no matter what might happen, motivating the remaining Genin to stay. With that, Ibiki passes the remaining Genin; the correct answer to the tenth question was to stay. The remaining Genin are left to the next instructor, Anko Mitarashi, who takes them all to the Forest of Death.
